Stressed out? Take a bath!

Lately I've been so stressed. So, I've gotten into the habit of treating myself to baths. Why didn't I do this sooner?! Its like I can feel my stress melt away with the hot water. Now when I take baths, I love to add things to the water, whether its a bath bomb, bath melt, essential oils, salts, or a combination. My favorite place to get bath products: Lush. Here I made a little list of my favorite relaxing bath. I'm sure I'll make some more of these little image lists...they're a good way to get a point across quick!

Oh My...I must get better at updating this

Geez, Louise its been a while! Been a busy, busy bee lately. Balancing artwork, my job, and a complicated relationship status takes its toll. But enough about that, here's the new art!

Working on a new personal piece, as well as a commissioned piece. The personal piece is an oil painting based on the concept of the balancing act we all play between following our heart and following our brain. I've gotten into adding art nouveau elements to my work, Mucha-esque framing mainly.  Here's a progress shot; its not far along for me yet to add a straight on shot.
















The commissioned piece is a digital one. Started as a pencil drawing and then I digitally colored it. She's not done yet, still have to tweak some things, like the proportions of the egg. I think it should be bigger.                        

 

Update: Phantasm an Book Cover Gig

Hello! So its been a while, I know. So, some things I've been up to: I did a poster for a screening of the movie Phantasm, and currently I am working on a book cover gig, both posted respectively. I'm pretty excited about the book cover, since its a departure from my normal sometimes disturbing subject matter, haha. The Phantasm poster was a fun experiment as well. Normally when I do digital work, I use an ink pen to draw out my lines. For this one, I knew I wanted a lot of solid black, so I actually used black acrylic paint. This is also the first time I used filters to create different effects, like the grain in the background, and the first time I have done hand drawn text.

Something New in Progress

So I'm working on a new personal piece. It's a bit different than most of my usual personal work in that the concept is not somber. This piece is actually about opening your heart up to allow others in. Roses, especially red, are a symbol of love. The thorns indicate the dangers of love, however even though it is danerous, it is something humans strive for. The wasp in dreams symbolizes negative emotions, so in the painting it stands for releasing the negative emotions from the heart and getting rid of them, but yet the wasp is still lingering so because we often keep our hearts guarded. This is a self portrait, not something I do often, but I decided to take a risk and go with it.

RAW Provocations Show and RAWards

Hello Everyone!

So the RAW Provocations Show was a great success. I met a lot of cool people, and got a lot of interest in my work, so I'm sure there will be a lot more shows for me in the future :)

Hello Again, Blog

So it's been a little while since I've posted on here, which means it is time for a massive update blog. I think it would be best to just make a list about what has been happening art wise lately with me, so here it goes!

• I'm working on a poster for the Etheria Festival in Massachusetts, which will be held in September. It is a festival for women in sci-fi and fantasy. 
• And, I finally finished my tree woman! I will post a good picture of her soon. 

Alright! Phew, that was a lot more than I remembered it being. I should probably get back to posting blog posts more frequently. And yesterday I finally got to the beach for the first time since summer started. It was awesome. Can't wait to get back there again.

Too Fast Apparel Interview

1. Let’s just start by having you tell us how you got into art in the first place. How old were you and what inspired you to start?
I know it sounds totally cliche, but really I started drawing as soon as I could pick up a pencil. I was the kid that didn't really need others around to entertain me, so I would just draw all the time. It wasn't until about 8th grade when I got serious about it. I was enrolled in a summer art class at Repenning Fine Arts in Audubon, NJ, and after seeing what I was capable of I realized that this was what I wanted to do. Before that I had never even touched oil paint, so I had no idea I could paint at all. So that fall I enrolled in the adult class and continued on with that up until I went to college at the University of the Arts.

2. You went to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. How was that experience?
I would say I had a very good experience there over all. It was tough, I cannot stress that enough. A lot of people think of art school as a cake walk, but they are definitely mistaken haha. But I feel my work really grew by going there. I had wonderful professors who I still keep in touch with and show my work to.

3. Your illustrations are wonderful, but you work in other areas as well. What mediums do you like to work on the most? And where do you see your focus being in the future?
Thank you! My favorite medium is definitely oil paint. I love the richness of it, and I love its consistency and blend ability. As far as my focus in the future, I don't really want to narrow it down to one area. I want to able to try my hands at everything and anything.

4. What artists are you influenced by the most? And do you find inspiration in other places as well?
The artists that have influenced me the more Mark Ryden, Tara McPhearson, and Cam Rackam. Cam Rackam really got me into band artwork after seeing some of the work he did for Avenged Sevenfold when I was younger. I'm also into Italian and Northern Renaissance paintings. Some of favorite painters from that time period art Sandro Bottecelli, Caravaggio, and Jan Van Eyck.
I am also influenced by nature. I grew up and still live in a house with woods in my backyard, and as a kid I loved to explore them. So there are nature elements in a lot of pieces. Other influences are books I may be reading, horror movies, and the music I listen to.

5. What kind of projects can we expect to see from you in 2012?
Well right now I just finished up a show poster for Snow Patrol's show in April at the Electric Factory, and I'm doing the collaboration with Too Fast. Also the print version of AJ Tillock's Grinding Reality: The Forbidden Bean will be coming out so I did the front and back cover for that. I'm also working on some personal pieces that are dark in nature and somewhat dealing with the spiritual. So, expect a lot new things coming from me!
